The fire broke out in a home and spread to an apartment building on Broadway just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“Right now we believe the fire started on the second floor of 793, but as I said, that’s preliminary. The cause of the fire is under investigation,” said Chief Keith Weaver, Bayonne Fire Department.
“We didn’t even have a chance to even call the cops. They came right away. As soon as we got there, the flames were 20 feet above the roof. It was pretty intense,” said Christian Hoffman, of Refinery Tavern.
A woman was taken to Bayonne Hospital where she later died.
The fire was proving stubborn for firefighters.

“Right now the buildings are too dangerous for firefighters to enter, so this is a defensive operation,” Chief Weaver said. “We will be using the master streams from the outside to knock the main body of fire down.”
Three firefighters are being treated for minor injuries at Bayonne Hospital.
The Red Cross is on the scene to provide assistance for at least 16 displaced residents.
“Really shaken up, I lost everything. And lost my friend who lived in the building, really devastated about that. I lost all my cats,” said Nancy Hymer, a resident.
The fire was placed under control later Wednesday morning. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
