Central bank raises EUR 307,000 for Ukraine via collector coin

The Bank of Lithuania has raised over 307,000 euros for Ukraine through the sale of a ten-euro silver collector coin dedicated to the war-ravaged country’s fight for freedom.

The central bank said in a press release on Thursday that it has sold 4,391 coins out of a total mintage of 5,000 pieces.

The total price of the coin is 96.8 euros, of which 70 euros is donated to support Ukraine.

A total of 307,370 euros have been transferred to the National Bank of Ukraine’s account for humanitarian aid, according to the press release.

“Ukraine needs help now as it is suffering from the horrors of war, and lack of electricity, heat and other basic necessities,” said Gediminas Simkus, the Bank of Lithuania’s governor.

“With almost 90 percent of the coin’s mintage distributed in less than a month, we are transferring funds from people and businesses immediately,” he said.

“We thank all those who have bought the collector coins and invite you to continue contributing,” Simkus said, noting that “there are just over 500 collector coins left.”

The proceeds from the sale of the remaining pieces will be transferred to the same account.

The coin was designed by Svitlana Matvieienko, a Ukrainian artist.

The center of the obverse of the coin features an image of the embroidered, stylized symbols of the coats of arms: the Vytis of Lithuania and the Tryzub (Trident) of Ukraine.

The reverse “features arms symbolically embracing everything that is a state, a nation fighting for tradition, history, the present and the future, as well as a stylized outline of Ukrainian state filled with volumetric details of ethnographic ornaments in cloth – as Ukrainians are defending their land, their homeland, their homes, their loved ones, the graves of their ancestors and their history”, according to the coin’s description on the Bank of Lithuania’s website.
