Summer has finally arrived and the most important day of American history, Independence Day, is upon us. A day where we remember our Founding Fathers declaring ourselves free of the British Empire and our own separate nation.
This Fourth of July, like every year, it’s important that we remember what separates us from most countries. Our citizens can speak out against the government without being arrested. Our citizens have the power to elect who represents them in government, instead of political elites choosing for them. Our citizens have the right to practice any religion they wish without fear of the government prosecuting them.
Unfortunately, there are countries where this isn’t the case. There are countries where citizens can be arrested for criticizing the government, or even killed. There are countries where mass media is controlled by the government, misinforming citizens and keeping them ignorant of the world around them. America is the greatest place on Earth and that’s why millions come here from across the globe.
And we should never forget those in the Armed Forces who put their lives on the line every day to protect our freedoms from foreign and domestic threats. So if you find yourself at a concert or watching a brilliant firework display across a dark sky on America’s 242nd birthday, don’t forget the freedoms that make this country great.
