Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that simplified the acquisition of Russian citizenship by those foreigners who are fighting for the Russian Federation in Ukraine.
For this, amendments were made to the decree of September 30 “On admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified procedure for foreign citizens and stateless persons who have entered into contracts for military service.”
The decree signed in autumn was supposed to grant Russian citizenship under a simplified procedure to foreigners who signed a contract for military service for at least a year – only if they took part in hostilities for at least six months.
Now, nothing is said about participation in hostilities, but there is a mention of a “special operation”.
Thus, foreigners who “concluded contracts for military service during the period of the” special military operation “, as well as members of their families, can now apply for a simplified procedure.
Earlier, the Russian Federation announced that more than 1.4 million Ukrainians have received Russian citizenship since 2019 .
At the same time, all residents of the so-called. “DPR” (captured territory of the Donetsk region) will automatically receive Russian citizenship .
Advisor to the Office of the President Mikhail Podolyak recommended that Ukrainians in the occupied territories not give up their Russian passports in order to “avoid repressions . “
